Walk and Talk Group Therapy: A New Way to Support Young Adults

This summer, a new walk and talk group therapy programme is launching in Milton Keynes, featuring a fresh approach to emotional support. Starting in July 2025, Walk and Talk Therapy offers young adults aged 18 to 21 a chance to explore their mental health in an open, relaxed, and genuinely supportive environment.

Held at the scenic Willen Lake, this five-week programme creates space for young people to talk, reflect, and connect—all while walking outdoors in nature.

A Different Kind of Group Therapy

Traditional therapy settings can be intimidating. Sitting in a room filled with strangers can heighten anxiety, especially if you’re unsure about reaching out for help.

This is where Walk and Talk Therapy comes into play. Instead of indoor sessions, participants walk side-by-side outdoors. This format naturally reduces pressure, making conversation easier and encouraging a gentle rhythm that supports emotional expression and connection.

Each session is guided by a qualified psychotherapist, allowing space to discuss topics like emotional wellbeing, identity, relationships, and life direction. The goal is not just to explore feelings but to foster a sense of community and belonging—something many young people yearn for right now.

Why Choose Walk and Talk Group Therapy for Young Adults?

This approach blends therapy's benefits with the healing qualities of physical movement and nature, making it particularly beneficial for young people who may find traditional therapy intimidating.

Nature Helps Us Slow Down

Being surrounded by greenery can calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and create a sense of perspective. The soothing sounds of water, the rustle of trees, and the expanse of open space help individuals feel more grounded and present.

Walking Encourages Honest Conversation

There's something uniquely liberating about walking that facilitates easier dialogue. Without intense eye contact, young people often feel more at ease to share what's truly affecting them. The consistent movement helps release tension, making it easier to open up without feelings of scrutiny or judgment.

Nature Can Be Part of the Process

This isn't merely therapy conducted outdoors—nature is integral to the therapeutic process itself. A therapist might encourage participants to reflect on their surroundings to express their feelings. For instance, noticing a still lake or a changing sky can provide metaphors for emotional states or transitions. By using the natural world as a mirror, some people find it easier to connect with their thoughts. Others gain comfort from the constancy and rhythm found in nature. Over time, the outdoor setting becomes more than just a backdrop; it turns into a resource for healing.

It Feels More Natural

Therapy shouldn’t feel clinical. For young people seeking support for the first time, Walk and Talk Therapy provides a more informal and approachable setting. This environment helps diminish the stigma often associated with seeking mental health support.

It Builds Real Connection

Group therapy ensures that participants are not isolated in their struggles. Being around others who share similar feelings can be incredibly validating. It reminds participants that they aren’t alone in their challenges and that support is readily available.

Body and Mind Work Together

Combining walking with emotional processing creates a powerful connection between the body and mind. This synergy can lead to deeper insights, a stronger sense of agency, and increased resilience over time.
